Q&A with VPFW’s newest OB/GYN, Kristen Lewis, M.D.
Dr. Kristen Lewis is excited to join VPFW, and we are thrilled to have such a spunky, warm, and friendly doctor as part of our practice! Starting this month, she is seeing patients at our Midlothian Turnpike and Prince George offices and delivering babies and performing surgeries at Johnston-Willis Hospital. We wanted to ask Dr. Lewis a few questions to help you get to know our newest OB/GYN.
Tell us a little about your background
Born and raised in Virginia, I’ve called Richmond home for the past eight years. I graduated from the University of Mary Washington with a double major in political science and biology, and I went to medical school at VCU. I just finished my residency in obstetrics and gynecology at VCU Health System and am excited to begin seeing patients at VPFW!
How did you decide to become an OB/GYN?
I have always been passionate about women’s health. While in college at Mary Washington, I wrote my senior thesis on the HPV Vaccine Mandate that was passed by the Virginia General Assembly. In medical school at VCU, I served as a patient advocate and hospital volunteer for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. My goal in becoming a doctor has always been to meet all types of women’s health needs and provide care through all stages of their lives.
What do you like most about obstetrics and gynecology?
I really like the diversity of patient interactions, which span from clinic, to labor and delivery, to gynecologic surgery. Being a primary care doctor and surgeon all in one means having the opportunity to form life-long relationships with my patients, which is something I value as much as they do.
Are there any areas you are drawn to specifically?
Some of my favorite areas within the field are the first-time visits for women looking to initiate contraception, obstetric care, or routine health care maintenance with regular pap testing. I love forming those relationships. I am also trained in and excited to provide minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.
What do you like to do outside of the office?
Right before starting at VPFW, I got a new puppy and I love playing with her at my home in Church Hill! If the weather is nice, I love to be outside reading a book or jogging. I am also a huge movie buff – I’ve seen every Academy Award Best Picture winner!
We have to ask, what’s your favorite movie?
I would have to say that my favorite movie is Hunt for the Wilderpeople, which is a heartfelt family adventure story that I would recommend to anyone!
Why are you excited to join VPFW?
Simply put, everyone here is happy to work here. There is this great sense of camaraderie that I think is essential to any health care team.
