What Is Obstetric Care?

Who Needs Obstetric Care?

Anyone who is pregnant or planning to become pregnant should look for local obstetric care. Seeking the advice of a professional trained in obstetrics can mean better care for both mom and baby.

Our women’s health specialists deal with everything surrounding a pregnancy, including preconception counseling, prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care in the months after you give birth. If you’re currently seeing a gynecologist, you’ll need an OB/GYN who is also trained in obstetrics to monitor your pregnancy and treat any complications that may arise leading up to and after delivery. We offer obstetric care that will guide you through your entire pregnancy and beyond.

Preconception and Preventive Care

It’s important to talk with an OB/GYN provider before you even begin trying to conceive in order to optimize your chances for a healthy pregnancy. VPFW offers preconception counseling services and guidance on how to optimize your fertility health and prepare for pregnancy. Your doctor will discuss things like your family and health history, medication adjustments, ovulation tracking, and ways to reduce your risk for birth defects or complications during pregnancy.

Treating Pregnancy Complications

If you are high-risk or have any complications during your pregnancy, our experienced obstetricians can recognize and help remedy any issues as well as keep you informed. They can explain what’s going on in terms you’ll understand to help you feel more comfortable, and they know when it’s necessary to work with a specialist.

Our obstetricians are familiar with diagnosing and treating complications like ectopic pregnancies, where the fetus grows outside the uterus, or fetal distress, where the fetus may not be doing well for one reason or another. They are also prepared for complications like placental issues, preeclampsia, or delivery through Cesarean section if necessary.

Birth plans and preferences

We appreciate that some patients have birth plans or preferences. It can be helpful for you to write them down and discuss with your provider so they can also advocate for you.

However, labor includes so many variables, and no one can predict exactly what will happen. Sometimes babies have a plan of their own (and don’t consult with you first). The primary goal of your care team is “healthy baby, healthy mom.”

Finding an Obstetric Care Provider

Here at VPFW, we provide the same high level of obstetric and gynecological care and attention for each of our patients, treating them like real people, not just another number.

We employ a team of nearly 40 expert providers and over 200 staff members who are all dedicated to your health care plans and overall well-being. You can browse our OB/GYN provider’s profiles to learn more about their backgrounds, see where they practice and deliver, and find one who’s right for you.

If you ever have a problem that requires immediate attention and your provider is not available, you will receive the care and attention you need from another member of our devoted obstetric care team. We always have on-call doctors available for after-hours medical concerns. It’s our goal to provide the best prenatal and essential obstetric care to women in the greater Richmond, VA community.

Whether you are new to the area or are searching for a new OB/GYN who will provide  obstetric care driven by your needs, we’re here for you. Pregnancy is a magical time for most women, but unfortunately, a lot of other care options are marred by efficiencies and other considerations that rarely put the patient first. Here at VPFW, our patients are always our primary concern, and our experience and professionalism are matched only by our compassionate bedside manner.
