Chromosome Abnormalities Prenatal Testing
What are chromosome abnormalities?
Genes are located on chromosomes within each cell of the human body. Each cell usually has 46 chromosomes grouped into 23 pairs. When a gene or chromosome is abnormal, it may cause health problems or disorders in the body, such as Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21). Chromosome abnormalities may be inherited from either parent or may occur with no prior family history.
Genetic testing for chromosome abnormalities
There are options for screening and diagnostic testing of chromosome abnormalities during your pregnancy. These options should be discussed with your physician so that you receive individualized care.
Testing is usually covered by insurance if the mother is over 35 or if the couple has a family history of chromosomal abnormalities, but not always.
Please check with your insurance company regarding coverage before getting tested. This is the patient’s responsibility.
