VPFW offers the Sona app for obstetrics patients to safely save and share their precious ultrasound images for free.

A Better Way to Save & Share Your Ultrasound Memories

Virginia Physicians for Women is now using Sona, a free, secure app that lets obstetrics patients receive select ultrasound images sent directly to their phone via text message.

Whether you want to show off your baby’s first photos to family across the country or post a sneak peek to social media, the Sona app makes accessing your ultrasound images easier than ever. You will no longer have to keep track of printed photos!

Key Features & Benefits

  • Secure, HIPAA Compliant Access: Images are delivered via encrypted link through the Sona cloud. For your privacy, shared images do not contain any Personal Health Information (PHI).
  • Easy Sharing: Invite family and friends to view your album directly in the app or download photos to share.
  • Completely Free: The basic photo sharing service is free for VPFW obstetric patients.
  • Optional Premium Upgrade ($10/year): Upgrading removes the small watermark from the corner of your photos and unlocks exclusive discounts on baby supplies through Sona’s partner brands.

Please note: Sona is designed specifically for your “fun,” shareable, keepsake images. For access to diagnostic ultrasound images, patients will need to make a request to VPFW’s medical records department.

How to Use the Sona App

  1. Download the Sona app at your first OB ultrasound: At your initial OB appointment, you will receive a QR code to download the free Sona app and register your account. When your ultrasound is complete, the technologist will enter your cell phone number to the ultrasound machine and upload your images to the secure Sona app.
  2. Watch for a text: Within 24 hours of your appointment, you will receive a text notification containing a secure link to your images.
  3. Access your photos: Click the link to view your photos and set up your free Sona account to start building your baby’s digital album.
  4. Share the joy: You can invite family and friends to view your album in the app or download photos to save and share as you please.

Confirm Sona Participation at Each Ultrasound Appointment

Images will be generated during each of your OB ultrasound appointments at VPFW. Please confirm your Sona participation with the ultrasound technologist at each appointment and let them know you would like your images sent via the Sona app.
