Meet Dr. Sam Kraus

Dr. Kraus joined Virginia Physicians for Women in September 2026, bringing an evidence-based, patient-centered approach to care. He finds guiding women through some of the most personal and meaningful moments of their lives to be a true privilege. 

A Harrisonburg native, Dr. Kraus spent the latter half of his childhood as a missionary kid in Kijabe, Kenya, where he was first exposed to medicine. He returned to the United States to attend the University of Virginia, and then moved to Richmond for medical school at VCU. He completed his OB/GYN residency at VCU Health, where he was honored to establish his patients’ trust by helping them make informed decisions. Open communication became a hallmark of his care at every stage of life.

Dr. Kraus cherishes the opportunity to walk alongside his obstetric patients through the joy and excitement of pregnancy, but also through the uncertainty, anxiety, and fear that comes with it. Whether helping to welcome a new baby, supporting patients pursuing vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), or guiding individuals and families through pregnancy loss with clarity and compassion, he strives to help them feel supported and cared for during some of their most meaningful moments. It’s a responsibility he hopes to never take for granted. 

Dr. Kraus loves that the relationship doesn’t have to end after pregnancy or once a patient has finished having children. He is committed to improving access to respectful, informed reproductive healthcare for women of all ages, from their reproductive years through menopause and beyond. 

Whether he’s helping a patient navigate a difficult diagnosis, consider surgery, or manage the changes that come with menopause, Dr. Kraus is dedicated to providing care they can trust throughout their lives. He chose VPFW for the opportunity to practice top tier medicine with an exceptional team and a shared dedication to seamless continuity of care. He loves that VPFW patients can expect a familiar, supportive face whether in the clinic, hospital, or operating room.

Dr. Kraus feels lucky to be married to the best wife and mother in the world. They have a young son who loves all things related to cowboys and construction vehicles, and are expecting a baby girl in winter 2027. When he’s not seeing patients or delivering babies, you’ll find Dr. Kraus spending time with his family, throwing a ball with his golden retriever Libby (named after Libby Hill), catching a game at the Flying Squirrels stadium, or staying active via outdoor running and Peloton.
