Meet Dr. Sanderson

Dr. Sanderson enjoys providing care for women throughout every stage of their lives, from before puberty and extending past menopause. She loves the continuity of following a patient from being a teenager who needs birth control, to their first Pap smear, to pregnancy, and menopause, getting to know them better with each visit.

She always thought she wanted to be a pediatrician, but after delivering her first baby in medical school, Dr. Sanderson was sold on becoming an OB/GYN. She’s had a soft spot for obstetrics ever since. She loves being involved in the entire pregnancy process, from the initial visit to the delivery and postpartum care, and she’s comfortable taking care of both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies.

Dr. Sanderson has a strong interest in long-acting reversible contraception as a way to empower women to care for their reproductive health. She is also interested in office gynecology, including the evaluation of abnormal uterine bleeding and cervical dysplasia, and management of these issues in a minimally invasive fashion. She is experienced with laparoscopy and hysteroscopy procedures, and she is DaVinci robotic-certified.

After receiving her undergraduate degree from the University of Mary Washington, Dr. Sanderson received her medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine She continued her postgraduate training at Virginia Tech – Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia, where she completed her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology. During her time at Virginia Tech Carilion, she served as the administrative chief resident, and she received multiple teaching awards as well as recognition for excellence in minimally-invasive gynecologic surgery.

Dr. Sanderson is a Virginia-native and knew that she wanted to move back to Richmond after completion of her residency training. She joined Richmond Women’s Specialists in 2019, and became part of the VPFW family when RWS closed in May 2022.

In her free time, Dr. Sanderson loves to be outside with her husband, their young son, and their pup. They enjoy eating (especially at the many great restaurants Richmond has to offer), visiting craft breweries, and spending time hiking, kayaking, or relaxing by the river. She and her family are even attempting the adventurous feat of visiting every national park in the United States!
