Shannon E. Brim, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

Shannon E. Brim, M.D., although born into a military family, has spent most of her life in Virginia. She went to Virginia Tech for college and considers herself a Hokie through-and-through. After graduating, she attended The University of Virginia for medical school where she stayed to complete her residency. She is married and has three young sons. She enjoys all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology but is especially fond of caring for pregnant women. She is fluent in Spanish and enjoys integrating this into her medical practice. When not working, she likes spending time with her boys, traveling, reading, and cheering on the Hokies.

What are some of your favorite things about living here?
I love the variety of restaurants in RIC. Whether you’re looking for a good burger or something fancy, you can find it!

What do you do for fun?
I love to play with my kids, watch football, tour wineries in the area, and read a good book.

What 1 thing do you never leave home without?

How do your patients describe you?
Patients usually describe me as friendly, caring, compassionate, and easy to talk to.

Why did you choose to practice medicine, and/or your field?
I had an astute advisor in undergrad who suggested I consider medicine as a career. I shadowed an ob/gyn in my Junior year and fell in love with the field. I never looked back and decided to apply to medical school the following semester.

When you’re craving a snack, what do you reach for?
Usually something salty – chips, peanuts, pretzels

Which women’s health issue(s) are you particularly passionate about, and why?
I truly enjoy all aspects of women’s health, however I am particularly passionate about caring for pregnant women. The whole experience is exciting, amazing, anxiety provoking, and unknown for most women and I love to be a part of the experience to guide, care for, teach, and help women to have healthy and happy pregnancies.

What hobby/activity do you most enjoy, and why?
I love to read – to my kids, magazines, good books, trashy books, anything!

If you could add 1 hour to your day, what would you do with it?
Can I say sleep? I would probably play with my kiddos!

What music is on your playlist right now?
Zac Brown Band and anything country

What was your first job, and how old were you at the time?
I was an assistant teacher in a 2 year old classroom at a LaPetite. I was 15!

What’s your favorite movie or TV show?
I honestly don’t watch TV regularly, unless there is football on!

Do you have a personal or professional motto?
Do no harm.

What was your favorite subject in school?

If you hadn’t become a doctor, what profession would you have chosen?
I probably would’ve taught ESL or been a translator.

What would you like to learn more about?
I would like to learn how to be a better cook. I make a few things well, but I’m not very adventurous in the kitchen.

What’s your favorite thing to eat in a restaurant?
Anything seafood
